Perfect cavalry? A lethal weapon whose secret no one else has? Or maybe just ... great diplomacy? Byzantium almost throughout its existence waged wars with one of its neighbors. How is it possible that it stayed unbeaten for so long?
John Haldon and his WAR BUSINESS. STRATEGY, TACTICS, CAMPAIGNS hit bookstores on March 26. It is a must-read for every lover of Byzantine and medieval history and at the same time an excellent overview of the military activities of the Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire survived for a thousand years, showing remarkable perseverance and organizational and ideological flexibility. The Christian empire created a culture capable of adhering to pacifist ideals while legitimizing the maintenance of an extremely capable army.
This brilliant compendium presents one of the most versatile and innovative armies of the Middle Ages that had to face, among others, Germanic and Slavic tribes, Persians, Arabs, Ottoman Turks and the Crusaders. Such a variety of enemies forced the flexibility of the art of war, which developed in an extraordinary way. Simultaneously with the description of wars and battles, the author analyzes the tactics and equipment of the Byzantine armies, technological and strategic aspects, logistics issues, and the role of mercenaries.
We recommend the book by John Haldon "Wars of Byzantium. Strategy, tactics, campaigns ” (Rebis 2019).
So far, no author has been tempted to provide an overview of the Byzantine wars. This book, based on historical sources, scientific research and a site vision, shows the highlights and shadows of the empire's military history , shedding a little more (and perhaps less romantic) light on this extremely sophisticated civilization. The text is enriched with battle plans, maps and numerous pictures.
