Richard J. Evans is one of the leading historians on modern German history. He was born in London in 1947. From 1989 to 1998 he was professor of history at Birkbeck College, University of London. From 1998 he was a professor of modern history at Cambridge University. In 1994, he was awarded the Hamburg Medal of Arts and Sciences for cultural services to the city, and in 2000 he was the chief witness in the libel trial of David Irving.
