One of the main objectives of the Nazi regime was to shake off the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles, which limited the German armed forces to 110,000 troops. Unilaterally breaking with the treaty would have been dangerous for Adolf Hitler in the early 1930s, so rearmament plans were carried out quietly.
Starting in 1935, the construction of new military complexes began throughout the country, as well as the creation of new military units. Within this rearmament plan, Magdeburg would soon become a particularly marked place.
That same year, 1935, work began on the Adolf Hitler barracks. The construction had to be carried out as quickly as possible, so the buildings of the complex were carried out in the simplest way of the time.
The complex contained several office buildings, rooms for the soldiers, as well as driving ranges and garages and workshops for the vehicles. The Adolf Hitler Barracks in Magdeburg housed an artillery regiment throughout the war, which soon became a panzer artillery regiment. About 2,000 soldiers occupied the complex.
After World War II, the complex was occupied by the Red Army, which abandoned it after the dissolution of East Germany. Today the former military installations house a higher education institute.
