The defeat of Germany in the First World War caused a huge impact on German society. Although more than the military defeat, it was the peace imposed at Versailles that marked the following decades. As Churchill rightly said after the signing of the peace, «we have not signed the peace, we have only signed a truce of 20 years «.
The veneration of those who fell during the Great War and the constant reminder of the humiliation of peace were recurrent themes in the propaganda of Nazi Germany during its few years of existence. Many monuments have been lost, but one of them can still be seen in the center of Hamburg.
Built in 1934, the 76th Infantry Regiment Memorial is a perfect example of Nazi art and propaganda. Artist Richard Kuöhl designed a large 10x5x7 meter block to represent the regiment together and marching. Around the stone block you can read the dedication to the infantrymen of that regiment. The memorial is completed with an impressive high relief of the soldiers marching to the front.
