How many people were prisoners in world war 2?

It is estimated that there were around 40-50 million prisoners in World War II. This number includes both prisoners of war (POWs) and civilian internees. POWs were military personnel captured by the enemy, while civilian internees were non-military personnel who were detained for reasons such as their nationality or political beliefs. The majority of POWs and civilian internees were held in camps, where they often faced harsh conditions and malnutrition.
