The Korean War Veterans Memorial is located in Washington, D.C., on the National Mall. The memorial honors the men and women who served in the Korean War, which lasted from 1950-1953.
The memorial is made up of several different elements. The main feature is a 19-foot tall stainless steel sculpture of a group of soldiers walking through a rice paddy. The sculpture is based on a photograph taken during the war by photojournalist Frank Noel.
In front of the sculpture is a reflecting pool. The reflecting pool is surrounded by a wall that is inscribed with the names of the 36,574 Americans who died in the war.
The memorial also includes a United Nations Wall. The United Nations Wall is inscribed with the names of the 21 countries that contributed troops to the United Nations forces that fought in the war.
