The Boston Tea Party was a political protest that occurred on December 16, 1773, in Boston, Massachusetts. A group of colonists, disguised as Mohawk Indians, boarded three British ships and dumped 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor. The protest was in response to the Tea Act of 1773, which allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonies, bypassing the traditional colonial merchants. The Tea Party was a major event in the lead-up to the American Revolution.
