Who made soldiers wear berets?

The French are credited with popularizing the wearing of berets by soldiers. In the 19th century, the beret was adopted by several French military units, including the Chasseurs Alpins, a mountain infantry unit that needed a practical and comfortable head covering. From France, the beret spread to other countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union. Today, berets are worn by military units in many countries around the world.
