Francisco Vázquez de Coronado's 1540-1541 expedition into the American Southwest was a major historical event. The men wore steel breastplates, iron helmets morions and sallets, leg armor, and chainmail shirts. They carried arquebuses, crossbows, and lances, as well as swords and daggers. They were also equipped with leather jerkins, blankets, a small amount of food and water, and cooking utensils. These items were essential to the success of the expedition and allowed Coronado and his men to explore the vast region.
