What does it mean when there is no mint mark on a 1973 Quarter?

The U.S. Mint began placing mint marks on quarters again starting in mid-July 1973 after years of having all their quarters made in Philadelphia without mint marks. So if there is no mint mark there is a high probability that it may be counterfeit or otherwise altered or damaged at one point and should be inspected carefully so there may be another distinguishing quality.
