Why were the specific targets of September attacks selected by terroristd?

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, also known as September 11 attacks or simply 9/11, were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by terrorist organization al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. metro area. Four large commercial airliners were hijacked, with two of the them being deliberately crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, a third into the Pentagon just ouside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after losing passenger control, crashed into field. Almost 3,000 people, including some first responders, and most casualties being civilians of over 70 nations including more than 400 police officers and firefighters, in addition to hijackers, were killed on that fatidic day. The attacks resulted in over US$10 billion in infrastructure and property damage; and $3-trillion in global stock market declines.

Although there were reports about a "plan", there is no reliable, verifiable information showing the reasons why specifically those two buildings (The Twin Towers) at this given day and given moment could have been chosen with that specific goal of terrorism in mind.
