The Governor of Bombay was shaken after reading the letter of Kanhaiyalal Maniklal Munshi. He got an idea of the power of Sardar Patel. He also understood why all the government tactics to thwart the movement were proving to be in vain. The fierce form that Bardoli Satyagraha had assumed was not a good sign for the Ghori government.
If this movement spread to the whole of India for a few days, then the Ghori government would have to tie its sacks and beds and return to England. That is why the governor made up his mind to compromise with Sardar Patel. The Governor invited Sardar Patel to negotiate a settlement. Sardar went here also after making full preparations. He had to single-handedly fight the powerful governor of the Ghori government.
If there was even a slight mistake in it, not only would all the work done so far get washed away, but the stigma of slander for life would also have been put on his forehead. People had put their lot at stake by trusting Sardar Patel. That is why Sardar Patel bluntly told the Governor on the table of settlement that the increased tax of the farmers should be waived. The Governor said that the government is ready to conduct an inquiry into the increase in rent and fix the appropriate rent after investigation.
Where it is necessary to waive the rent, the government is also ready to waive the rent, but the condition is that the movement should be withdrawn and the farmers should start paying the rent as before. Sardar Patel was waiting for this moment for the governor to appeal to him to call off the movement. Sardar Patel told the governor that the movement can be stopped but the condition is that the people who were taken captive during the agitation should be immediately released unconditionally.
The government employees who have left their jobs during the agitation should be taken back immediately. The farmers whose land and livestock have been confiscated should be returned to the farmers immediately. The governor accepted all the words of Sardar Patel. Perhaps the governor knew what determined and stubborn leader he had faced.
It was certainly a resounding victory. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's success rang in the whole country. In fact, the first experiment of the nationwide movement conducted by Gandhiji and Congress was successfully seen by Sardar Patel in Bardoli's laboratory.
The nation understood that there is nothing greater than the unity of the people and Patel is the magician who created that unity. He first came to be called Sardar of Bardoli and later only Sardar for conducting strong Satyagraha in Bardoli.
