Rene-Robert discovered the great lakes and named them. He later found the river Ohio, the largest tributary of the Mississippi river as well as the Gulf of Mexico. While sailing the Gulf, La Salle claimed all the lands near it for France which became known as Louisana after King Louis XlV.
