What were Marquette and jollet looking for on their expedition down the Mississippi river?

Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet were French explorers who set out on an expedition down the Mississippi River in 1673. They were searching for a Northwest Passage, a fabled route that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and offer a faster, more direct route to Asia. They also sought to learn more about the lands and peoples of the Mississippi River Valley and to convert Native American tribes to Christianity.
