The first explorer to explore the American coast was Christopher Columbus. In 1492, he set out from Spain in search of a new route to Asia but instead landed in the Bahamas, which he believed was part of Asia. He never made it to the mainland, but his voyages opened the way for further exploration and colonization of the Americas by the Spanish.
