How did Newry get its name?

Newry (An Iúraí in Irish, meaning "yew river") is a town in County Down in Northern Ireland, near the border with the Republic of Ireland. The Irish name Newry is derived from An Iúraigh (The Yew River). The name is possibly derived from the medieval Irish word iúr (yew) and the Old Irish verb fothraim, meaning "to wash" or "to bathe", reflecting the ritualistic use of yew (the sacred tree of the druids) in Irish mythology.
