After 2000 years, new remains appear in Pompeii

After a month of exploring Regio V, a new study area, the site of Pompeii reveals new treasures.

Detail of a fresco recently appeared on the wall of an unknown domus excavated in Regio V of the site of Pompeii (Italy).

The grill of a window submerged for 2000 years under the lapilli, frescoes of cherubs, a pair of leaping dolphins on the red ocher walls of a domus unknown... Every day, discoveries are revealed from the new sector studied at the archaeological site of Pompeii, in Italy, the ancient city buried under the ashes of Vesuvius in 79 AD. So much so that on April 12, Massimo Osanna, director-general of the archaeological park, could not resist posting photos of these wonders from the past.

Since the archaeological authorities of the Roman city decided to take an interest in this sector, which has never been studied since the engulfment of the city in the 1 st century, "remains of public and private spaces as much as gardens and porticoes, but also objects, began to emerge from the ground “, tells Massimo Osanna to the Italian news agency Ansa. As we mentioned recently on the Sciences et Avenir website, for the first time since the end of the Second World War, a major excavation and exploration campaign has begun on a thousand m 2 in Regio V , district located north of the Roman city.

High-tech excavations carried out as part of the "Great Pompei Project ". "These works should last two years for a total cost of 8.5 million euros “, according to Massimo Osanna. A period that will undoubtedly deliver other surprises. The sector should remain accessible to the curious throughout the duration of the works.
