History of the Internet:Who Created It and When It Came

The history of the internet begins in the setting of the Cold War (1945-1991). The two superpowers involved, the United States and the Soviet Union, were divided into socialist and capitalist blocs and vied for power and hegemonies.

Arpanet and the Origin of the Internet

In order to facilitate the exchange of information, as they feared attacks from the Soviets, the United States Department of Defense (ARPA - Advanced Research Projects Agency ) created a system for sharing information between geographically distant people in order to facilitate war strategies.

At that moment, the prototype of the first internet network appeared, the Arpanet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network ).

Thus, on October 29, 1969, the first connection was established. between the University of California and the Stanford Research Institute. It was a historic moment, once the first email was sent.

Creation of www

In the 1990s, the British scientist, physicist and professor Tim Berners-Lee developed a browser or browser , the World Wide Web (www), the World Wide Web - Internet.

Its creation is responsible for presenting to the world the way we use the internet today. Therefore, despite not having been the inventor of the connection between geographically distant computers (the aforementioned Arpanet), it was the British who developed the model that we access daily.

From then on, the 90's became known as the "internet boom", because that's when it became popular around the world.

This popularization happened with the emergence of new browsers or browsers and the increase in the number of users, internet browsers.

Examples of browsers of the time:

  • Internet Explorer;
  • Netscape;
  • Mozilla Firefox;
  • Google Chrome;
  • Opera;
  • Lynx.

In view of this, there was a great proliferation of websites, chats, social networks, such as Orkut, Facebook, MSN and Twitter, making the internet the global network or web of connected computers.

Some scholars believe that the Internet was an important and decisive milestone in technological evolution. That's because it overcame barriers by bringing people, cultures, worlds and information together.

This fact, according to them, had not happened since the arrival of television, in the 50's.

Today, the Internet is used worldwide as a tool for work, entertainment, communication, education and information. Therefore, it is common to hear:"I can't live without internet ".

In addition, because taxes are lower, many products are sold on shopping sites.

Internet in Brazil

In Brazil, the Internet emerged in the late 1980s, when Brazilian universities began to share some information with the United States.

However, it was from 1989 onwards, when the National Education and Research Network (RNP) was founded, that the dissemination and access project gained strength.

The main aim was to spread Internet technology throughout Brazil and facilitate the exchange of information and research.

In 1997, "local connection networks" were created, thus expanding access to the entire national territory.

In 2011, according to data from the Ministry of Science and Technology, approximately 80% of the population had access to the internet. This corresponds to 60 million computers in use.
