United States

The United States of America (USA or USA, from United States of America ) are the world's largest power. Located in North America, the country borders Canada and Mexico.

The country is divided into 50 states and is bordered by the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic oceans, the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

US Flag and Anthem

The 50 stars on the US flag represent the country's 50 states. The 13 horizontal lines represent the thirteen colonies that gave rise to it.

The lyrics to the United States Anthem date from 1814 and were written by Francis Scott Key . The anthem is named The Star-Sapangled Banner (Starry Flag) in English. It consists of 4 verses and was inspired by the vision of the country's flag flying in Fort McHenry after the British bombing.

Next, Los Angeles (California) has more than 3 million inhabitants. The third largest city is Chicago (Illinois), with more than two million inhabitants.

Flint and Detroit, Michigan and Oakland, California are considered the most violent cities in the country.

Sights of the United States

The USA is one of the most visited countries in the world. There are numerous tourist spots. Just to name a few that are true symbols of the country:

  • Statue of Liberty, Central Park and Times Square, New York.
  • Mount Rushmore, South Dakota.
  • Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The Statue of Liberty measures about 46 m, almost the same height as its base. Every monument measures 92.99 m. The crown of the statue, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, can be visited.

The Central Park It is the most famous park in the USA. It welcomes millions of people annually and comprises a vast expanse of gardens, lakes and other attractions in what is the most populous city in the country.

The Times Square it is one of the most visited and busiest places in the country. It is the intersection of large avenues that are busy with commerce and traffic. Times Square hosts one of the most famous New Year's Eve parties in the world.

The Mount Rushmore it is the place where the faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are carved.

The Bridge Golden Gate is a well-known tourist poster. She appears frequently in American films. It has a total length of 2,737 m and 27 m of width. Their average traffic is around 100,000 vehicles a day.

American Culture

Due to US imperialism, US customs, from sports, music, to technological aspects, tend to be imitated all over the world.

One of the most outstanding aspects of the country is its gastronomy . US cuisine is known for fast food , apple pies and high daily coffee consumption.

Breakfast there includes pancakes, eggs, bacon and waffles .

History of the United States

The origin of the United States stems from the formation of the Thirteen Colonies in the 17th century. They had been instituted by Great Britain in the process of English colonization in North America.

The thirteen colonies were:

The English crown controlled the commerce, the laws that established the increase of taxes on products, and the armed force. that changed the economic policy of the colonies.

With no representation in the British Parliament, the American colonists declared war on the British. In 1775 the War of Independence begins.

On July 4, 1776, the United States gained independence from England. The colonies became states, but the English only recognized independence years later, and in 1783 new territories were incorporated. Finally, in 1787, the United States became a Federal Republic.

In 1845 and 1853, the Americans invaded and occupied Mexican territories such as Texas, California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico and areas of the states of Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming, which corresponded to almost half of Mexico.

Presidents of the United States

  • The first US president was George Washington whose term began in 1789.
  • Richard Nixon was the only American president to resign.
  • Four presidents were assassinated:Abraham Lincoln in 1865; James A. Garfield, in 1881; William McKinley in 1901 and John F. Kennedy in 1963.
  • In 2008, the first African-American president was elected:Barack Obama.
