The Cáliz of Valencia

For many Spaniards the Grail it really exists:it is a small chalice measuring only 7 centimeters, with an agate cup, a double-handled gold stem and a chalcedony base, around which runs an Arabic inscription still not completely deciphered. An Aragonese tradition narrates the long journey made by the Santo Cáliz :brought to Rome from San Pietro , he was transferred to Aragon from s. Lorenzo to preserve it from persecution against Christians. From the eighth century it was kept in the rock monastery of S. Juan de la Peña , about 70 km from the Templar preceptory of Huesca , where a faithful copy of the Santo Cáliz is exhibited . In 1399 , in exchange for a gold cup, it was given to King Martin I of Aragon , which took him to Zaragoza ; from here he arrived in Valencia where, from 1437 , has found its final location in the Cathedral .
