With an area of 1,366,199 km², it covered most of northern mainland Canada between the Yukon Territory and Keewatin District and most of the Mackenzie River valley, the Great Bear Lake and the Great Slave Lake . It was founded in 1895 and administered from Edmonton. it ceased to exist in 1979.
