Agri Decumates , in the Ancient Black Forest and the adjacent areas of present-day southwestern Germany between the Rhine, Danube, and Main. The name may indicate an earlier occupation by a 10-canton tribe. The Romans under the Flavian Emperors began 74 n. Chr. With the annexation of the territory to ensure better communication between the Rhine and Danube armies. According to Tacitus , the area was previously inhabited by the Helvetii; later Gauls settled there. The Romans were expelled from the Agri Decumates by the Alemanni in about 260 n . Chr .
