Belvedere:The “Gandoét ravine”

To the left of the 9th Company, Lieutenant Jordy, commanding the 11th Company, discovered on the other side of the Rio Secco, the entrance to the ravine which he had spotted the day before with Commander Gandoët and which we already calls the "Gandoët ravine". It is a chimney in a sheer cliff, but whose sides protect. Jordy sinks in, pulling all his sections towards him group by group.
Tough climb due to the steep drop, and the men are quickly harassed and transformed into beasts of burden by the weight of the weapons and additional ammunition, including mortar shells to fuel their battle.

At daybreak, we emerge into open ground and Jordy tries to recognize his objectives in the horizon which is gradually revealed in front of him:they are there within reach. At this time, he was joined by two sections of the 10th reserved company sent to him by Commander Gandoët.
Second Lieutenant Bouakaz commands one of these platoons. He is a friend of El Hadi whose death he learned during the night. He is shown the piton called "unnamed" which precedes the impressive crest 862, the battalion's objective, easily recognizable.

He immediately claims the honor of arriving there first and, to do so, he will first attempt, by an overflowing movement, to gain a foothold on the nameless nipple. But already the alert is given and the defenders are on the alert. Casemates must be neutralized with grenades and Second Lieutenant Bouakaz is killed by setting foot on the unnamed nipple. This loss galvanized the skirmishers who launched an assault on Hill 862, carrying the corpse of Second Lieutenant Bouakaz, who had sworn to get there first.
