The Steyr AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr, "universal military weapon") has without doubt, of all the assault rifles, the most singular appearance:it even has a little side
War of the stars ". It is a “bull-pup” type weapon (literally, bulldog), in which the trigger assembly is placed in front of the magazine, and which is both short and compact in appearance. The barrel and the receiver (the latter in cast aluminium) are the only metal parts; everything else is made of nylonite and other composite materials, which are of excellent quality. But the refusal to use metal is pushed so far that the magazine is made of transparent plastic, which allows the soldier to know at a glance how many cartridges he has left.

The Steyr AUG was not designed as a simple assault rifle:by varying the length of the barrel, or by changing the accessories, one can obtain a rifle, a weapon for sniper or for night operations, and even a light machine gun. The standard sight is a simple optical telescope whose reticle is suitable for normal combat distances; but you can mount on the weapon a night sighting device or a telescope.
The dismantling of the AUG is very simple, and cleaning is made easier thanks to the chrome plating inside the barrel:moreover, the design is of the modular type and any repair can be carried out by simply replacing one of the modules, for example the trigger assembly or the slide.

Production began in 1978, and since then Steyr has been actively working to meet the needs of the Austrian army, several countries in the Near East and certain units of the South African army;
also used by the forces of Algeria Tunisia Australia Belgium Ecuador Netherlands New Zealand; Djibouti; Serbia Taiwan; Italy...
