Count of the Empire in 1808, after a brief stay in Spain, he distinguished himself again in Essling and Wagram. He succeeded in bringing back almost all of his grenadiers during the retreat from Russia. In 1813, he was still fighting in Saxony with his horse grenadiers, upset the Bavarians at Hanau and died suddenly on his way to Metz. The Emperor had him buried in the Pantheon.
