Thomas Picton

Thomas Picton (August 24, 1758 – † June 18, 1815) was a Welsh Major General of the English Army killed by a bullet to the head at the Battle of Waterloo.

Waterloo

His division formed the right of the Anglo-Dutch force during the battle, including the 92nd Gordon's Highlander. This division pushed back the 1st army corps of Drouet D'Erlon and preceded the great charge of the British heavy cavalry. He is the highest ranking ally to die in the Battle of Waterloo.

A stele marks the spot where he was killed.

Anecdote

A famous anecdote says that he fought that day in civilian clothes, the luggage containing his uniform having been lost. The internal Picton family legend reports that he fought in a nightgown and top hat because he had slept too late. None of these versions are supported by historical sources.

His name appears on the list of guests at the ball of the Duchess of Richmond which was held the day before the Battle of Quatre-Bras without his presence being confirmed. He was wounded during this fight of June 16, 1815.
