Jacques-Louis David

David, The Sabines, 1799

Jacques-Louis David is a French history painter claiming the heritage of his predecessor Nicolas Poussin. Member of the Academy of Fine Arts, Jacques-Louis David was born on August 30, 1748. He became a renowned painter at the age of thirty-seven with his work Le Serment des Horaces (1784-1785). In addition, his admiration for Napoleon Bonaparte will earn him a certain recognition with Le Sacre de Napoléon (1805-1807). Jacques-Louis Davis died on December 29, 1825. Today, his works are largely exhibited at the Louvres. There is also Bonaparte crossing the Grand-Saint-Bernard (1801), exhibited at the Château de la Malmaison. He was one of the most admired artists of his time, representing art and politics in this way (he even went so far as to vote for the death of King Louis XVI, which would lead him to be imprisoned).
