Excerpt - Livy
The aspect of the Gauls surprised and filled with fear because, according to the custom of the country, they came armed to the assembly. Boasting in their speech the glory and the value of the Roman people, the greatness of its empire, the ambassadors asked the Gauls not to let the army of Hannibal cross their territory and their cities in case it would go towards Italy.; so, it is said, they broke into such a burst of laughter that the magistrates and the oldest had great difficulty in calming the youth, so absurd and insolent this request seemed to them:to think that, in order to avoid war in Italy, the Gauls would bring her home and expose their territory to devastation to defend that of others!

When calm was restored, the ambassadors were told that no service rendered by the Romans, no outrage on the part of the Carthaginians justified their mobilizing for the Romans against the Carthaginians. On the contrary, they heard it said that in Italy people of their own race were expelled from their lands and their country, that tribute was exacted from them and that they were subjected to all sorts of vexations. It was more or less the same scenario in the other Gallic assemblies and there was practically never any question of friendship or peace before the arrival in Marseille.
