Ancient history

Characteristics of the Southern Countries

The so-called underdeveloped countries, or the poor South, have similar histories, with at least three points in common:

- almost all of them were colonies and as such they lived for countless centuries in function of their metropolises. Example:Nigeria (Africa) and Brazil (America).

- were culturally invaded by habits and values from rich countries, and lost many of their traditions and references.

- after achieving political independence, they became prey to imperialism, which acted with great freedom in the former colonies, as it had the support of local authorities.

Social differences

All over the world there are rich and poor people. However, in the South, social inequality is much greater than in the North. According to sources from the World Bank of the United States of America, in 1995, the income of the richest 10% was about 4 times higher than that of the poorest 40%.

No In Brazil this difference reached 20 times, making our country a world champion in income concentration. With the passage of time the tendency is only to increase such inequality, which is already a critical factor for development, will become a bomb ready to explode.
