The Reunification of Germany

The reunification of Germany took place on October 3, 1990 when the territory of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR or East Germany) was incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany (RFA or Germany West).

Germany was divided between the main victors of WWII.
Subsequently, the two Germanys managed to recover from the enormous material losses they had suffered during the conflict.

However, in the 1970s, one could already notice an important difference between them:while East (communist) Germany was just another developed country, West (capitalist) Germany had become the world's richest countries, with an advanced industry and a strong currency.

In the following decade, this difference was accentuated, generating enormous discontent among East Germans.
In 1989, a series of popular demonstrations broke out in East Berlin demanding an improvement in the quality of life and, above all, the democratization of the regime.

Some time later, negotiations began between the governments of the two Germanys for the reunification of the country.
On October 3, 1990, the agreement that formalized the political unification of Germany entered into force.
