Battles of the 5/42nd Regiment of Psarros against the conquerors – Testimony

Lieutenant General Georgios Kaimaras was one of the pioneers of the guerrilla movement in Roumeli. With the rank of captain, he joined the EKKA organization of colonel Dimitrios Psarros and fought against the Italian and German invaders before 5/42 was disbanded for the third and bloodiest time by the ELAS of the EAM. His personal testimony has, therefore, special weight. The testimony in question comes from his own report of 1972.

"After the capitulation of Italy, parts of the 5/42 were ordered under Commander Psarros to besiege Didorikion and force the Italian Guard of this (2000 plus men, guns, machine guns, tanks, etc.) to surrender . The Italian General of the Guard deceived the English Commander-in-Chief JEF, who gave him an extension of the deadline under the dispatch of a negotiating committee of the Synod (Commissioners Kaimaras G, Mitalas, Vlaikos).

"In the meantime, numerous German reinforcements arrived from Nafpaktos and a fierce battle took place between the involved units of the Syn/tos (Kaimara Company, Loch. Kranias unit) and the Italo-Germans. The Germans passed unmolested through the narrowness of the STENOS, which allowed them to hold the ELAS units and launched a circular attack against the units of the 5/42 fighting on the heights of Lidoriki after the Italians.

"Thus, the Syn/ma did not manage to achieve the intended goal, due to the treachery of ELAS, on the one hand, and the inexplicable intervention of the English Chancellor JEF on the other. The units of the Syn/tos withdrew higher during the night and established a guard on the W. CAROUTS heights. The losses of the enemy were great, and the greatest burden of the battle was borne by the Kaimara Company and the Crania division. During this battle, Ax-kos was wounded and slightly rebelled.

Battle of Skaloula (14-9-43)

A strong force of Germans, rushing from Lidoriki surrounded the village of Skaloula and after gathering the women and children in the church of the village, began to loot and set fire to it. The Kaimara Company was suddenly and fiercely attacked from the direction of PLATO and caused the Germans to flee disorderly, who panicked and shut themselves inside the entrenched camp of Lidoriki. Thus the aforementioned Company rescued the captured women and children and the entire village. In this battle, men of the militant group of Karutos also took part. During this battle, Lieutenant Lainas X. fell fighting heroically and some of the men of the Headquarters were wounded.

Battle of Tsakoremma (17.9.43)

Fierce and bloody battle for the conqueror took place on both sides of the TSAKOREMATOS bridge clashes between the Kaimara, Kokoris and strong German Motorized phalanx of more than 50 cars and tanks. The Germans were pinned down and pounded for several hours by the reaping fire of the machine guns, submachine guns and automatic weapons of the 5/42 insurgents. The rebels of the Kaimara Company fought from a guaranteed distance (50 to 200 meters) with unprecedented heroism and self-sacrifice and inflicted serious losses on the enemy (dead, wounded, disabled cars).

After the exhaustion of the last cartridge, the men of the Regiment were unregistered and retreated to the heights of GIONAS, taking with them the wounded (Lieutenant Kaimaras, Commanders Kaimaras Pan. and Kokoris N.). The Germans returned to Amphissan with heavy losses, unable to fulfill their mission. By a plane that landed at KIRRAS airport, seriously injured German soldiers were transported to ATHENS. Governor Kaimaras was promoted to corporal under General Psarros for his heroism and self-sacrifice on the battlefield.-
