History of Europe

The savior of miners.

George Stephenson He was a British engineer and inventor famous for being the inventor of the steam engine (which later perfected his son Robert).

But the miners will be eternally grateful to him for being the inventor of the safety lamp for mines (he shared credit for the invention with the British Humphry Davy ). George was the son of a miner fromKillingsworth (where he came to work replacing his father), at that time the miners went down to the coal mines with gas lamps to light up, but on contact with the firedamp it exploded and caused many deaths and landslides. Canaries began to be used as "warners" for gas leaks, but explosions still occurred.

So, Stephenson got down to work to prevent these deaths and invented the safety lamp .

Its operation is simple, this first lamp had a fine metal mesh of iron or copper that surrounded the flame, allowing, in part, to escape the light and preventing the exit of the flame to the outside. The flame in contact with the wire mesh cools sufficiently to prevent its spread to the outside air. The grateful miners took up a collection and gave him £1,000 in thanks.
