The Drink of the Gods

The Drink of the Gods

The Aztecs believed that the god Quetzalcoátil had brought cocoa beans from the sky and given them to humans as a gift.

Cocoa trees are known to have existed for over 4,000 years. Scattered by birds and monkeys.
In 1502, Christopher Columbus was the first European to try cocoa. Who was really impressed with the drink was Hernán Corteis:17 years after Columbus, he was welcomed by the Aztecs with a cup of chocolate (chocolate is consumed during the ceremony in an illustration taken from the Aztec codex).

Curiously. The Spaniards arrived in present-day Vera Cruz on the date marked by the Aztec calendar as the probable return of Quetzalcóatil.

The people celebrated the arrival of Cortés with this return and Montezum II, the emperor at the time, offered him a great feast.

Right after the feast, he served the mixture of cold, sparkling chocolate mixed with honey, spices and vanilla into golden cups.

He said that whoever drank the chocolate would have strength, vigor and would also share a little of the god's wisdom.
Despite the kind reception, a year later the navigator arrested the Aztec emperor and took his lands.
