History of North America

The oldest European settlement in the US is Spanish.

On July 4, 1776, the 13 British colonies signed the Declaration of Independence, the United States was founded .

Logically, customs, culture and language are impregnated with "what is English"; although, currently, the Latino minority is becoming more numerous and is beginning to have a certain importance in the American community. But, as the title of this post says, the oldest European settlement in the US is Spanish. We are talking about Saint Augustine (Florida) .

San Agustín was founded by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés on August 28, 1565 . Forty years before the first English settlement. The reasons for its foundation are not colonial or economic, but military. Spain located a military contingent to stop the attacks of the pirates.

Later this settlement was known for «the false currency » (a literary license that I have allowed myself); It went from hand to hand (Spain, pirates, England and the USA) and nobody kept it. Definitely, in 1821, Spain sold Florida to the US for 5 million dollars that must be with the «Moscow gold «.

An interesting fact:a map of St. Augustine, which shows Sir Francis Drake's attack in 1586 and was made by the Italian cartographer Giovanni Battista Boazio, was auctioned in 2007 for 1.29 million dollars.
