Historical story

Caravaggio died of Septicemia

Portrait of Caravaggio

Michelangelo Merisi, called Caravaggio , died on 18 July 1610 , aged only 39, due to septicemia from Staphylococcus aureus.

This is established by careful scientific research conducted on the remains of the great painter, which thus definitively clarifies a mystery that began four centuries ago.

The artist's body was found in 2010 in the ancient cemetery of San Sebastiano in Porto Ercole , in Tuscany; the confirmation of identity came later through the execution of the Dna exam.

Famous not only for his extraordinary talent, but also for his turbulent life and his irascible character, Merisi contracted the infection following a knife wound received during a fight.
