Historical walks are back in Athens

After the many-month forced interruption due to the pandemic, the historical walks are returning. The following routes are planned for the next two weeks:

On Sunday, June 27, the meeting place is the steps at the entrance of Zappeion Megaros at 10:30 am, from where the walk entitled "The Battle of Makrygianni" will begin, walking the route taken by ELAS fighters on December 6, 1944, during the attack against three target buildings in Plaka and the barracks of the Makrygiannis Gendarmerie Regiment. How was the battle at Makrygianni? Why didn't the barracks "fall" on the first day of the attack, when everything seemed to have ended with the victory of ELAS? What happened in the other three smaller battles (Department of Transport, building of the 1st Army Corps and 2nd Police Department)?

On Saturday, July 3rd, the meeting place is the central square of Kaisariani (in front of the National Resistance monument) at 10:30 am. for the walk entitled "The Fall of Caesariana". What happened in the most important battle of the Decembrians on December 7, 1944? How did the tanks of the Mountain Brigade arrive at the central square of Kaisariani on December 18 and what happened next? Finally, how did Caesariani "fall" into the hands of the British on December 29, 1944?

On Sunday July 4th, the meeting place is Kaningos square at 10:30 am. From there will begin the tour entitled "The perpetrators of the Occupation" in the dark world of the Greek collaborators of the Germans:the Greek agents of the SS, the organization National Union of Greece and the persecution of the Jews, the Casinos of the Occupation, the Greek pro-Nazis of ESPO, the "Hellenic S-Es" of Klathmonos square etc.

On Saturday, July 10, the meeting place is Messolonghi Square in Pagrati at 10:30 am. From there, the route entitled "Pagrati in Occupation" will begin. What was the contribution of the actors to the Resistance? Why was the Pagrati High School a "nursery" of the Resistance? What happened in the Gouva block and what was the suicide mission of ELAS in Pagratio Square? Papageorgiou's group and OPLA:the conflict that bloodied Pagrati.

On Sunday, July 11, the meeting place is Kolonaki square at 10:30 am. A historical walk entitled "EAM Rally - Decembriana" in which the participants will follow the steps of the demonstrators of the rally organized by EAM on December 3, 1944 in Syntagma Square, which was the starting point of the Decembriana. What exactly happened that day? Who shot first? How many were the dead? What happened after the first shots? From which district was the block of protesters that came under fire?

After the end of each walk, there is a viewing of photos from the period and a discussion in an open space (park).
