Vladimir Putin:I will not hurt democracy. I'll just be like Roosevelt

During a meeting with a group of analysts and political scientists belonging to the discussion club, Valdai, the former president and current prime minister of the Russian Federation referred to an episode in the 20th-century history of the USA.

"The president of the United States, Roosevelt, was elected to his office four times in a row because it did not violate the US constitution," Putin said on Monday. - "Neither I nor President Medvedev will do anything that would violate the current law in the Russian Federation and the Russian constitution."

One may wonder whether Putin's words are another indication that he is going to run for a third term or is just an attempt to extend the public debate on this subject. The very selection of the historical analogy seems more interesting. Rarely has a Russian president and then prime minister openly "modeled" the US political system. Anyway, with regard to the latter, it is worth recalling that the Roosevelt case was an isolated one, and now - due to the limited number of terms of office - it would be impossible to repeat.
