An unusual purchase by Dominika Kulczyk

Dominika Kulczyk informed that she had decided to buy a house near Paris, where the Polish Nobel Prize winner, Maria Skłodowska-Curie, lived and worked. After the planned renovation, the property is to become the House of Sisters - a meeting place for women.

"Maria Skłodowska-Curie has proved with her life that limitations do not exist. She showed that women can be leaders in the most difficult areas of science. They can indicate directions that the world will follow for decades. She has become a symbol of female strength and a harbinger of great change. ” - these are the first sentences of the statement by the president of Kulczyk Foundation and the chairman of the Supervisory Board of Polenergia S.A.

The house will be renovated and the end of works is scheduled for 2025

"Honor the legacy of our Nobel Prize winner"

At the end of April last year, the scientist's house was put up for sale. Price? Less than 800,000 euros. There was a considerable risk that it would be purchased by private individuals for housing purposes or by investors for whom it would not be of intangible value. Therefore, in May 2021, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki published an entry on social media in which he wrote:

"I have commissioned urgent measures to purchase Maria Skłodowska-Curie's house near Paris, which has been put up for sale by the current owner. This place is an important part of Polish history. ”

A year has passed and the property has still not changed hands. Until today. On June 6, 2022, Dominika Kulczyk announced on her social media:

"I want to honor the legacy of our Nobel Prize winner. This is why I decided to buy a house near Paris where she worked and which meant so much to her. The house of Maria Skłodowska-Curie is the property of all mankind. I would like this place to be alive again, serving European science and culture. ”

The 120-meter house was built in 1890 in Saint-Remy-les-Chevreuse near Paris. The building also includes a garden with an area of almost 900 square meters. For Maria Skłodowska-Curie, a two-time Nobel Prize winner, the property has become a place of rest. Together with her husband Piotr, she used it in the years 1904-1906. After her husband's death, however, she stopped appearing in it regularly.

What's next?

The house will be renovated and the end of works is scheduled for 2025. Further activities of the Kulczyk Foundation are also known.

"It will then create a Sisterhood House. A natural meeting place for women whose activities, like Maria, cross all barriers known to us. We are starting a major renovation of the house to restore its splendor. Keep your fingers crossed! ” - writes Dominika Kulczyk

According to the announcement, the House of Sisters will also reward women who, like Maria Skłodowska Curie, make their visible contribution to the development of science.

"Apart from Dominika Kulczyk, the sisterhood includes, among others, Iryna Deszczyca, Ewa Ewart, Agnieszka Holland, Olga Tokarczuk and Oksana Zabużko. Today, the sisterhood is awarding funding under the 'Hello Girls!' Grant Program. The selected projects are to help women from Ukraine and their children ” - we read in the Kulczyk Foundation press release.
