Historical story

Wesermunde Marine School

The city of Bremen was of vital importance to the Navy of Nazi Germany. Together with Wilhelmshaven and Kiel, it was the most important port in the country from a military point of view. A school for naval officers was established near Bremen to provide training for the growing Nazi Kriegsmarine. The navy had been practically dismantled after the First World War, so its restructuring represented a great effort for the regime.

Two type 750 and type 1100 anti-aircraft bunkers were also built at the base facilities. These facilities should allow the base to function even if attacked. The Wesermünde naval school was intended for the training of naval non-commissioned officers and other minor positions. It was in operation between 1935 and 1945. After the disappearance of Nazi Germany, the facilities were used by the American occupation forces. Since 1956 it belongs to the Bundeswehr, the new German armed forces created during the cold war.

How to get to the Marina Wesermünde school

The Marina Wesermünde school is located in the coastal town of Bremerhaven. The facilities are still active, so civilian visits are not allowed inside.
