Historical story

Headquarters of the High Commissioner of the League of Nations

Between 1920 and 1939 the ancient city of Danzig was an autonomous city under the trusteeship of the League of Nations. The international organization born after the First World War had the objective of preserving peace in the world and was in charge of monitoring the countries defeated after the war.

Although the city of Danzig had in that period a local parliament and a government elected from among its citizens, an authority from the League of Nations was always present to monitor compliance with the laws. In the interwar period, 10 high commissioners were present in the city, always coming from the victorious countries in the war.

As a city-state, the Free City of Danzig had the power to issue passports and had its own currency, the Gulden, which was in circulation until the introduction of the German Reichsmark after the conquest of the city.

The headquarters of the High Commissioner was located next to the central railway station of the city. The position was in force until the annexation of the city by Nazi Germany in September 1939, a few days after the start of World War II. The building today belongs to the local administration of Gdansk.
