VAUX-LE-VICOMTE:An Ile-de-France favorite

A true architectural gem, the result of the creativity of a man with a tragic destiny, Vaux-le-Vicomte is a must to visit in Ile-de-France. Follow me, I'll take you to visit this estate just 50 kilometers from Paris and live a timeless experience for your leisure time.

HISTORY OF CASTLE VAUX-LE-VICOMTE

Let's start with the history of Vaux-le-Vicomte in a few lines. It is always more pleasant to visit, contemplate and stroll within a castle and its garden by knowing part of its experience, isn't it? Initiated by Nicolas Fouquet, superintendent of finances during the reign of King Louis XIV, the construction of this castle began in 1656, and this for 5 years. Owner of the village of Vaux and the two surrounding hamlets, Nicolas Fouquet decided to build his home there.

This statesman with a creative spirit will call on the greatest artists of his time to materialize his artistic ideal. At the wand, the renowned:
– Louis Le Vau, the architect in charge of drawing the plans and calling on his creativity
– Charles Le Brun, painter-decorator of the interior of the castle
– André Le Notre, gardener at the Domaine de Vaux-le-Vicomte and creator of the first French-style gardens

A true architectural masterpiece of the 17th century, and we now understand why, the castle of Vaux-le-Vicomte is the witness of events that will forever mark the history of France. It has become a real museum of art and history.

Right now we are very lucky. Although private, this property classified as a Historic Monument in France, wishes to remain open to as many people as possible and to make discover its jewels, its art and its history. Thank you to the Vogüé family, for this beautiful decision of March 30, 1968:opening to the public for several decades.

ANECDOTE:
the inauguration evening of the castle (August 17, 1661)

Eager to inaugurate his castle and use this architectural masterpiece to flatter his ego, the superintendent invites thousands of people to celebrate and discover the work of artists on August 17, 1761. The star guest of this evening is none other than King Louis XIV, accompanied by his court. What was supposed to be an evening of glory for Fouquet finally turned into a nightmarish experience! To ensure the success of the inauguration, Fouquet does not skimp on the means and calls on the greatest artists to amaze his guests. The King and his Court were thus treated to fireworks, multiple shows in the gardens and the castle, dishes prepared under the direction of the famous Vatel, a comedy-ballet by the famous Molière and Lully, treats and diamonds served to ladies, …

But perhaps he overdid it? Following this evening, King Louis XIV touched in his pride decided to make Nicolas Fouquet pay for his lack of modesty. Three weeks after this evening Louis XIV had Nicolas Fouquet arrested by the most famous of the Musketeers:d'Artagnan.

VISITING VAUX-LE-VICOMTE CASTLE

Let's start with the inside of the castle

Four furnished levels are accessible to visitors. Expect to live a unique experience in the heart of this historic place during this day as if the Fouquet family had never left it.

The ground floor:

This floor is without a doubt my favourite, in particular for its classic and original architecture designed by Louis Le Vau. You will discover there:

The Grand Salon :in my opinion, this is THE flagship piece of Vaux-le-Vicomte. Oval in shape, its architecture is both sober and elaborate. All the rooms of the castle are articulated around this living room intended to host festivities, but unfortunately unfinished.

The Antechamber of Hercules: last of Nicolas Fouquet's 4 ceremonial salons. This mention of Hercules is not insignificant:this character represents power, courage, audacity. Fouquet, through this antechamber, wanted to show his success in the eyes of all his visitors.

The House of the Muses :I invite you here to raise your eyes and observe the ceiling of this ceremonial salon by Fouquet. You will find 9 muses that adorn the ceiling designed by Charles Le Brun.

The King's Chamber and Antechamber :Nicolas Fouquet was no exception to the rule. Each castle fitted out a bedroom for the King of France, the court at that time being particularly itinerant. The objective was to welcome Louis XIV for the night.

The Buffet Room :very innovative for the time, this room served as a dining room for all the guests.

The 1st floor:

Nicolas Fouquet’s apartment :the only room that has kept its original decor, Nicolas Fouquet's bedroom invites you on a journey through time. On the ceiling, you will find a Fresco representing the Triumph of Fidelity, to show its attachment to King Louis XIV.

Madame Fouquet’s Apartment :composed of a bedroom, an antechamber and a cabinet, Madame Fouquet wanted a worked and feminine decor.

The lantern and the frame:

Let's take the height, and now climb more than 25m above the ground on the lantern that overlooks the dome. Start by discovering the frames of the castle which were recently restored. Then take the walkway and enjoy a 360° view of the estate.
Attention, the visit of the lantern and the frames is optional. Price:€3.

Let's continue with the exteriors of the castle

When leaving the castle, I invite you to position yourself just in front of the castle on the garden side. Turn your back on it, and observe this magnificent French garden that awaits you. What is the specificity of the Vaux-le-Vicomte garden then? Stroll in this garden, follow its paths, and rejoice in the gift of André Le Nôtre. The illustrious gardener chosen by Nicolas Fouquet has fun surprising you throughout your visit with thoughtful and elaborate optical effects. You will be surprised by the appearance of new elements:steps, flowerbeds, fountains, and at the bottom...a large canal that you will need a good quarter of an hour to circumvent to enjoy the view overlooking the entire estate. .

Tip if you come with your family: If you want to discover the whole garden, I advise you to rent a very practical cart to amuse the children and allow them not to get tired.

Opening hours and prices:
– the day from 10:30 a.m. – behind the rental at 5:30 p.m.
– 20€ for 45 minutes
– no reservation is possible, a license and a deposit are required.

If you are wondering how you are going to be able to eat during your visit to Vaux-le-Vicomte, don't worry, there is something for all tastes and all budgets.

"Le Relay de l'Ecureuil" restaurant:

This restaurant is my go-to choice. Fast and affordable, it is a good alternative when you want to have a restaurant. In self-service, you will find balanced dishes as well as dishes for children, with the possibility of eating on the terrace or inside.

Location:directly on your right when leaving the ticket offices

For those who don't want to waste time, a good alternative is offered in the garden of Vaux-le-Vicomte:a kiosk offering sandwiches, salads, hot and cold drinks, and some delicacies 😊.

"Les Charmilles" restaurant:

This restaurant is clearly MY GOAL for this year. Gourmet and ephemeral restaurant, it is ideally located on the terrace, with an exceptional view of the estate. A gustatory and romantic experience to live in the company of your other half. It is unfortunately only open during Candlelight Evenings!

Budget:However, this is not cheap, count €64.50 for the meal per person / €27.50 for children.

But do you have the opportunity to live a castle life, to dine in front of gardens designed by Le Nôtre? My personal opinion:I think the game is worth the candle (no pun intended 😉 )

The Dream of Vaux

This is a champagne bar located in the castle garden, offering a splendid view of the castle and its estate. It is also only open during candlelit evenings!
I was able to enjoy it at sunset, a glass of very good champagne in my hand. Deckchairs are available. Not to be missed, especially for a romantic moment.

Budget:€14 for a glass of champagne / €9 for a fruit cocktail / €10 for macaroons
