Entry into the army in 1755, he was captain in 1789. General of division in 1793 he commanded the Army of the Rhine. At the head of the Northern Army he won the victory of Hondshoote in 1793. But then decided on a retreat which turned into a rout. Dismissed and then arrested, he was brought before a revolutionary court and guillotined after being accused of sparing the enemy.
