Charles of Valois(1270 - 1325)

Son of Philip the Bold and Isabella of Aragon, Charles de Valois was the father of Philip VI, the future king of France of the Valois dynasty. Moderately intelligent, overly ambitious and fairly greedy, Charles de Valois collected principalities. In 1280, the pope recognized him as king of Aragon (under the vassalage of the Holy See), but he was driven out by the local population during the Sicilian Vespers. His main quality is to be a good warlord. He commands in Flanders with efficiency in 1297. But Charles dreams of the imperial crown which he will never obtain. During the reign of the last direct Capetians, he played a leading political role.
