Member of the Cordeliers club and friend of Danton, Brune took part in the repression of Vendémiaire alongside Barras and Bonaparte . He took part in the Italian campaign, then put an end to the Vendée insurrection. He returns to Italy where he replaces Masséna. Barras and Napoleon quickly dismissed this republican by appointing him ambassador to Turkey. Returning to France, Brune was assassinated by royalists during the White Terror. His body is then thrown into a river.
